When it comes time to start buying furnishings, the hardest step is often figuring out how to go about it. This guide to buying furnishings solves the problem nicely!
When buying furnishings there is much you need to take into consideration. Your furnishings are something that you will have for many years to come, and picking the right piece can be an overwhelming experience. Taking this guide to buying furnishings into consideration before you head to the store will aid you in finding the perfect piece for your home.
Make sure you are prepared. Thinking of your long-term goals is extremely important. Before you visit your first store, make a floor plan of the room you are buying furnishings for to determine how a piece will fit and whether it will look right. Dimensions are equally as important. Know the exact square footage of the room, as well as the dimensions of each piece. You may see a couch that will look like it will fit but after you return home, you find out it is too large. This can all be avoided by traveling to all stores with a tape measure.
When buying upholstered furnishings, never buy a piece when you first see it without taking home a piece of fabric to test against your other pieces. Also, fabric looks different under various lights, so you want to make sure you try the fabric during both day and night to make sure you truly love it.
Testing the furnishings is probably the most valuable tip you should take from this guide. Make sure that it is comfortable for a long period of time. It may seem strange to be stretching out on a couch in the middle of a showroom, but furnishings are something that you can’t change your mind about later. Take your shoes off and get comfortable, and stay on it for a while before deciding. You’ll notice soon if the dining room table chairs you are sitting on put a strain on your back, or the couch you are sitting on becomes stiff.
Last, but definitely not least, never buy on impulse. You may see an item marked down 50 percent, but before you buy make sure that it is the exact color and shape you want. A sale makes you feel good about buying, but when you get home and realize that it doesn’t match or fit in, you will find yourself spending even more money to find a perfect piece later on.
Buying furnishings takes time, and should never be rushed. Quality furnishings may take months to find at the price you want. Just be patient and you soon you will have furnishings that can be handed down for generations.

As soon as you start looking into purchasing furniture, you are going to be confronted with a lot of different categories. In this article, we take a look at Edo furnishings.
A Guide to Edo Furnishings
Edo furnishings gets their name from a period of classical Japanese culture that flourished in the area of Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan between 1500 and 1780 AD. Kyoto was a beautiful city with cherry tree lined avenues, and a highly developed appreciation of the arts. The area surrounding Kyoto was heavily wooded, and carpentry was a highly respected craft. Thousands of carpenters from the area were used to build the wooden castles and palaces of the country’s rulers, and they also made furniture that was typical of the art of the area and time.
It was characterized by understatement, simplicity, and restrained elegance. It was very much influenced by Zen and the harmony of nature. Much of the pieces were crafted from fine mahogany and beech. The beech tree made up the majority of the workable wood in the area, and was used frequently.
After the isolated culture of Japan came into contact with Western Culture, some of the western ideas began to find their way into the Edo furniture pieces. It was a remarkable melding of the two cultures. The older pieces tended to have little curvature in their design, but due to the western influence this began to creep into the designs. The basic English chest of drawers that was little known in Japan became a popular piece and a favorite of the Edo craftsmen.
After World War II, it was the Western World that discovered Edo furnishings. It was noticed first by servicemen in the Occupation Forces, who often brought pieces back home with them. In the industrial rebuilding of Japan following the war many of the original craftsman, who had been producing the classical furniture pieces one at a time in their little shops, were replaced by modern factories. The beauty and the elegance of the look were retained in most cases, and the secrets of the craft were transferred to the new designers.
In the West, Edo furnishings are often used as a room theme. Bedrooms are especially popular. The Bedroom was always considered the most important room in Japanese culture, and still plays a more important role in modern Japanese home design than is usual in the West. The result is that Edo beds and bedroom furniture represent some of the most popular and finely crafted examples of the Edo theme. It has been found that Edo pieces do not necessarily have to constitute the entire theme of a room, but rather they blend nicely with other types of furniture.

When one starts thinking about purchasing furnishings for a home, certain time periods inevitably come to mind. Painted cottage furnishings are no different.
Painted Cottage Furnishings
The essence of Painted Cottage furnishings is the appearance of age and a sense that somehow the piece must be a family heirloom of great sentimentality. It is said that when a piece of Cottage furnishings rolls off an assembly line, it already looks old. The look had its beginnings in America in the years prior to the Civil War most notably on the East Coast. It had the restraint of the Victorian era in its design, but was usually decorated with colorful hand painted designs.
After the Civil War, the people in the North began to turn their attention to luxury items, and Cottage pieces began appearing in the homes of the very wealthy. The look was so popular that it did not stay exclusively a luxury item for long, and workshops began turning out pieces designed for the average home. A very few of the pieces had carvings, but the majority were decorated by painting. Flowers and fruits were the most common design used. Even the beds, that followed the Victorian mode and featured extremely large headboards, had brightly colored designs painted on them.
Many of the craftsmen making the items were much better carpenters than they were artists, and the designs were often crudely drawn. Strangely, these primitive looking drawings added to the charm and sometimes even to the value of the pieces. Other artists were a bit more talented and produced rather elaborate landscapes, sailing vessels, or examples of local wildlife. The most popular colors were tan, blues, greens, and pinks, and some of the pieces were left unpainted. On these pieces, the natural wood was heavily varnished and the only color came from the brightly painted design.
In the early part of the last century, Cottage furnishings began to appear in antique shops, and few new pieces were produced. There was a shift in the idea of just what the Cottage look meant during this time. It was during this time that it really earned its name. The motif was based on the idea that the pieces were basically left over pieces from the main house that were being used to decorate the guest house. This is where the idea of age and sentiment came into the picture. Many of the pieces were from the original period of popularity a generation or two earlier, and had been retained in the family. They were too old and did not fit into the more modern decorating trends of the time, but you just couldn’t bear to throw them away.
Today you can still find Cottage furnishings in flea markets, antique shops, and even yard sales, and the look is more popular for the den or guest bedroom rather than the living room or master bedroom. The bright colors, cheerful pastels, and the primitive, colorful designs have retained their charm, and have led to resurgence in the manufacture of the pieces. They are now also being found more often in retail stores.

One aspect of an eco-friendly life is the furnishings we purchase. Like cars and other items, we now look at the ‘carbon footprint’ of the products we use and consume, and decide whether a piece will outlive the value
of the energy it consumes in making, delivering it and using it; as well asthe methods of manufacturing and whether they contribute to the global environment or damage it in some terrible ways.
The ‘carbon footprint’ of furniture is an excellent way to learn to assess the true value of purchases you make. For example, the energy required to import your furniture from the other side of the globe means that your pieces will need to last at least 20 years to ‘pay for themselves’ in terms of the energy used in transport alone.
With the flood of cheap furniture, poorly processed wood and poisonous staining & finishing practices, the ecological damage done is of serious concern! These pieces are designed to be replaced within two to three years of manufacture, shipped across the planet for resale, and leave a poisonous trailall the way.
What can we do to improve our environment, improve our own economy, and still get great furniture? One solution is to purchase furniture made as locally as possible. If it isn’t made in your home town, is it made in your state? Your own country? If so, the carbon footprint will be reduced very much. Is it made of hard woods? Poor practices like pressed board, plywood, and construction staples are reliable indications of a high carbon footprint and a short life span. Purchase only the pieces that are designed and built to last. You may get tired of certain styles, like industrial modern, and be looking to replace items much too soon. Get the styles, wood types and stains that make you feel
relaxed and confident, more than ‘up to date.’ Remember that manufacturers get your money by creating trendy pieces that are only good for a year or two. They are built to fall apart or be out of style and ugly in a short time, forcing you to replace them over and over again.
Considering the energy use going into manufacturing, finishing and shipping your furniture allows you to do what is good for the environment, good for your economy, and good for saving limited resources.

Older homes have a style all of their own. They possess their own character that comes from the many years of generations and memories they hold within their walls. The old saying, “if walls could talk” holds a
special meaning in these fine stately matriarchs of an era gone by. Older homes have provided security and warmth to those who have lived within their walls. They deserve special care when we attempt to “dress” them. Consider your older home the same way you would your grandmother. Grandma came from a different era of fashion and style. She was stylish and fashionable in the styles of her day. Grandma certainly doesn’t dress, nor wish to dress in the modern styles of present times.
Today’s sleek modern style for the younger generation doesn’t fit your grandma, and neither should it fit your older stately home. Instead of remodeling and forcing the home into a more modern style that will take away both its charm and character, consider accenting its own value with furnishings appropriate for its age.
Just as you would carefully select the perfect color and age appropriate blazer to top your favorite slacks, select the perfect furnishings for your home, giving consideration to the homes age and style. Homes from years gone by were adorned with large wooden ornate furnishings. Don’t be afraid to capture that look again.
Many stores offer reproduction furniture that will look like the real thing, but it’s still new. It will offer none of the old world charm, nor the delight of treasure hunting for just the right authentic pieces to outfit your home with.
Start with your dining room and search for the perfect buffet. It should be large and decorative, taking up the center spot on an entire wall. Buffets know their importance as they house all of the fine dinner linen, and special dinnerware. They will proudly declare, “Look at me, I am so grand!”
Follow the buffet up by placing a large wooden dining table in the room. Match the two pieces as close as possible to the same color and style. If you’re lucky and hit just the right flea market, or thrift store, you may find a matched set. Check all of the second hand stores in your area for these wonderful antique finds. Yard sale, auctions and estate sales are also great sources for old world, antique furniture.
Always dress your antique table and buffet with scarves, flowers and candles. Hang a picture from a country era over the buffet and, of course, place candle sconces on either side of the picture. Also look for an old pitcher and wash bowl during your shopping trips. It should set prominently on the buffet. Consider looking for a large braided rug to add to your dining room’s charm.
Don’t be concerned if your shopping turns up pieces that are slightly worn or scratched. This only adds to their charm, and if you are really concerned about the wood’s appearance, you can quite easily strip it and stain the wood. You can check here for a great article on how to do that.
Most of the time, you will be pleasantly surprised with the piece of wood, by simply washing it down with Murphy’s Oil Soap and warm water, then applying a coat of Scott’s Liquid Gold Wood Preserver. Keep your antique pieces heavily oiled for several days as the wood will continue to absorb the oil, if it hasn’t been cared for in awhile.
Remember that while you are adding character and style to your home, you are also “going green” and repurposing furnishing that might have ended up in a landfill, if you hadn’t rescued them. Not only are you creating a wonderful home environment, you’re being responsible doing it. Happy shopping!

Choosing the right furniture for a property is a challenging task. Well matched furnishings can add significant value and prestige, whereas inappropriate, dilapidated or garish furnishings and decor can
detract value from a property, and easily put off potential buyers.
With so many different ways to decorate properties, it’s essential to decide on the style or theme before setting out and spending money on eye catching materials. Firstly, ask yourself, what sort of property needs furnishing? Is it your home, a first home, a rented abode or a buy-to-let property? There are universal rules to follow and definite points to remember depending on the property.
If the property is going to be lived in by you then obviously it is up to you, how you want it to be decorated. However, always remember if you ever decide to sell the property, think about furnishings that will make it look homely, try not to be too loud and above all show off the property in the best possible light.
On the other hand, if your property has been bought as a buy-to-let or is to be sold fully furnished; it’s essential to remember this will not be your home and you won’t live there. For that reason you should break all emotional attachment you might have. A number of people believe a cost-effective solution is to opt for the cheapest furniture and throw it in. Although it will make a minimal impact on the budget, it will probably only make a minimal impact on potential buyers. It will be obvious the furnishings are cheap, probably not suitable and likely to be replaced.
If cash flow is constrains you from opting for more suitable or sophisticated furnishings, don’t fret, there are still some fitting alternatives available. One popular route taken by but-to-let experts is to rent furniture. Buy-to-let furnishing specialists can provide complete furniture packs, skillfully put together to suit any home or purpose. It is a cost effective solution that can maximize a properties potential by showing prospective owners or tenants just how special it is.
As with all properties, with a view to rent or sell, it is worthwhile choosing neutral colors when it comes to decor. Keeping to paler shades and tones will reduce the risk of instantly putting off would be dwellers, since a bad first impression can jeopardize the whole property, so hide your leopard skin velour loveseat straight away!
Another point to consider before finding your perfect furnishings is safety first! It is a legal requirement that all upholstered furniture provided in furnished lettings to meet with the furniture and furnishings fire safety regulations of 1988, therefore ensure all furniture complies with this or you could face legal action.
In summary, think carefully about suitability of furniture and decorations within your property. Remember not to rush into any decisions, since it can be costly and frustrating to remove inappropriate furnishings , particularly large items such as sofas. Additionally, don’t just opt for the cheaper option if you are letting out the property, remember to consider all your options, be sure to check where the sales are or consider buy-to-let furniture specialists so you don’t have to worry about what will go and what won’t. After all, the more exclusive the furnishings and fittings are, the greater likelihood of attracting more discerning tenants who will look after and cherish your property more.

One of the most important tasks when furnishing a room is to make sure that you are using the area to its maximum capacity, leaving enough space for movement while still providing all of the surfaces that are
required. With a space that is too crowded, movement is restricted and the energy levels in the room will be stifled and suffer. If you can’t move freely through the room, you won’t feel free in the room and you will certainly spend less time there. However, if the room is comfortably furnished and walking from Point A to Point B proves easy and carefree, the room becomes much more enjoyable and freeing. It will become a good room for the home or workplace.
